ConnectIT

What’s ConnectIT all about?

The government agenda demands deployment of ICT to improve administration, advance socio-economic development, increase citizen engagement levels and modernise the delivery of services across the public sector.

For local government, the challenge is doing all of this and more, but with less. Heads of IT are tasked with identifying and implementing cost-efficiencies throughout the back office; enabling shared services; driving greater efficiency in delivery than ever before; and do so in ways which are more sustainable.

Through ConnectIT, the local government ICT network event, the South African Local Government Association (SALGA) is providing a platform that will bring together ICT practitioners in local government to discuss, deliberate and share successful models of service delivery and proven initiatives that have transformed the way local government serve citizens.

The event has two purposes. As an initiative of the newly launched The Local Government ICT Network (LGICT Network), the main purpose is to enable local government practitioners to share IT practices, products, ideas and services – not only for their own mutual benefit, but for the public they serve; discuss common challenges and, together, find solutions to unsolved problems.

Discussions will focus on how local government can provide valued services and initiatives, designed on the needs of constituents, and contribute in addressing financial constraints through the intelligent use of ICT. The event also provides a forum for ICT providers. which develop and deliver solutions, services and initiatives for local government, to share best practice solutions.

The second purpose is about exploring successful ICT implementations and discovering new ways of reducing the costs of ICT itself, consolidating spend, streamlining delivery and taking advantage of new technologies such as ‘cloud’, open source, social networking and emergent communication technologies.

At the core of ConnectIT is to advance the development of an integrated, collaborative and networked “new” local government.
