ICT in the Province

Personal ICT

Limpopo Personal ICT Statistics

All data was extraced from StatsOnline (http://statssa.gov.za/). the This figure combines the data from several survey, namely the Census 2001, the General Household Survey 2005 & 2009 and the Community Survey 2007. The methodology and questions are not completely standardized across those surveys. It is therefore questionable whether the data actually is compatible and can be combined as presented in the figure. In absence of better alternatives we assumed that it is fine to compare the data in order to get an impression of general tendencies.

The figure gives an impression about the availability of personal ICTs within the province. Limpopo has the lowest density of landline connections and as a result the lowest percentage of private internet connections. Unfortunatly statistics about internet access via third locations have not been comparable accross the surveys. It can be assumed that another 1 to 2% have a access through third places like libraries, school or internet cafés excluding place of work. At work 4.6% state to have access to the internet.Ownership of cellphones has increased to a very high extent, while demand to landline telephones has decreased. Statistical data indicates that more than 80 % of the inhabitants have a cellphone. The cellphone is therefore media number one in Limpopo, overtaking even the radio. The spread of cellphones is above average.

The province also has the second lowest percentage of household with televisions. The density of households with radios or computers is well below average.
