Making the right ICT connection, a successful SALGA ConnectIT Event: Download all the Presentations

SALGA recognises the transformational force Information Communication Technology or ICT’s can play and therefore has an interest in ensuring the relevant adoption of ICT and related technologies within Local Government both increase their internal stability, efficiency and productivity, as well as provide opportunities to narrow social and economic inequalities, thus helping to achieve broader national development goals. In driving an outcomes based approach Government also clearly highlight the linkages between ICT’s as a key enabler of development and employment creation.

SALGA, in hosting the ConnectIT event, shares the perspective that Local municipalities are a fertile ground for the application of ICT’s. Being at the front lines of government, municipalities face the complexities of their service-oriented interactions with the public and business, often in transaction based systems with many, interlinked components. Despite all the challenges, municipalities have considerable potential to assist in the process of integration of ICT’s into the daily lives of its citizens. ICT’s, like any other technology, provides a platform for municipalities to deliver services to the public. However, technology on its own cannot achieve anything, but a vision supported by the necessary people and processes will provide services that the public can have confidence in.

Connect IT was really just a catalyst to provide all municipal ICT practitioners to meet, share and present on what they feel is relevant ICT information, knowledge, news and good practice. That said, it is the online platform www.lgict.org.za for the ongoing conversation and debate to continue on critical issues common to local government and ICT. As you all know, membership of the LGICT Network is free to all local government, but now we are looking to towards all of you to drive such a forum for the exchange of knowledge and successful ICT practice and for municipal peer-to-peer support and learning across disciplines.
